Marco Berengo

Dal 16 ottobre al 7 novembre 2010 Berengo Studio presenta, nella sua storica e più prestigiosa sede, la mostra personale dell’artista austriaco Adi Holzer.

La Galleria Berengo Collection, situata nelle immediate vicinanze di Piazza San Marco, è un’antica farmacia in cui sono stati sapientemente mantenuti gli arredi d’epoca in legno intarsiato e gli oggetti tipici dell’antico mestiere affinché dialoghino con le opere in vetro esposte sugli antichi scaffali e banconi.

Per la sua prima personale in Italia, Holzer ha realizzato una serie di sculture in vetro caratterizzate dalla prevalenza di colori freddi, come il bianco, il blu e l’azzurro, tipici dell’arte nordica, scaldati da qualche accento di rosso e arancio, che ricorda l’amore dei popoli del Nord per la luce e il sole.

Oltre alla ricerca coloristica e al sapiente uso della luce come elemento narrativo anche i soggetti e i temi conducono alle atmosfere nordiche: la cupezza delle foreste, dei cieli plumbei e degli inverni rigidi fa da sfondo alla narrazione di un mondo misterioso e fiabesco, che si mescola a quello del folklore e delle saghe.

Come nelle favole di H. C. Andersen, anche le opere di Holzer svelano sofisticati insegnamenti morali. La dualità tra bene e male, luce e oscurità, innocenza e depravazione, crudeltà e seduzione, il conflitto tra ciò che è attraente e ciò che è spaventoso, tipico dell’immaginario infantile e della cultura protestante, viene dall’artista usato come strumento narrativo e affabulatorio.

Le opere di Holzer sono molto più legate al mondo reale e alla contemporaneità di quanto sembri: ingannano per l’atmosfera  incantata e teatrale che sanno creare, ma in realtà descrivono la nostra società e la nostra epoca, dove la contrapposizione e lo scontro tra i valori, tra le paure e i desideri  segna l’esistenza di ognuno.

Massimo Lunardon – Aliens from Venice

First solo show in Japan ! We present the recent sculptures in glass , Life-size pieces .

Massimo Lunardon was born in Marostica (Vicenza) in 1964. Graduating in industrial design from Domus Academy in 1991, he made blown glass his personal field for artistic and design research. He has worked with various companies and architectural firms to create prototypes as well as objects in limited series.

He has been the professor of flameworking at the Vetroricerca School in Bolzano since 1998.

From 1992 to date, he has participated in many art gallery and museum exhibitions both in Italy and abroad.

Using his experience in design – developed during his many years of working with designers and architects – and in borosilicate glassmaking techniques, the artist has put together a very interesting project, one that lies at the border between reality and fantasy, between art and design.

For our Handmade issue, Kiki van Eijk and Venice Projects created a sculptural, long-necked standing mirror for Wallpaper*, using traditional Murano glass-blowing techniques at the Berengo Studio. Here, Janice Blackburn tells us how the piece came to fruition.

Lost and disorientated in a drab and muddy industrial park on the outskirts of Eindhoven, I wandered into a vast warehouse and found myself in a design wonderland. It was the studio of Kiki Van Eijk and her partner, Joost Van Bleiswijk, crammed with oversized, exquisitely handcrafted objects, including teapots and spoons made for giants, mammoth cabinets, clocks and lanterns, in a variety of materials such as bronze, wood, pewter and porcelain. Alice would have felt quite at home in this strange, surreal workshop.

It wasn’t long before we were in conversation and I proposed the idea of introducing the design duo to the entrepreneurial and bombastic Adriano Berengo, one of the few remaining independent glass manufacturers in Murano. One arm of Berengo’s company, Venice Projects, actively collaborates with artists and more recently designers, to produce ravishing limited edition glass objects. I immediately sniffed the makings of a successful collaboration.

Returning to London and numerous emails later, Kiki and Joost flew to Venice as guests of Berengo to explore the possibilities of working together to fabricate one-off limited edition pieces for a collection launched at Sotheby’s in May. With little difficulty they agreed to the Berengo proposal. At the same time, and quite coincidentally, Wallpaper’s design editor Henrietta Thompson approached Kiki to be part of the Milan ‘Handmade’ project. They were already considering including a standing mirror and Kiki thought it would be fantastic to make it in Murano glass. With no time to waste Kiki and Joost returned to Murano in late January and work commenced. Seven objects were made for the Sotheby’s show, as well as Kiki’s ‘Standing Mirror’ for Wallpaper* – a combination of metal (fabricated in Murano) and glass.

Kiki regards the Standing Mirror as furniture. She says: ‘It mirrors everywhere: even the legs are made of glass with mirror inside. Everything is glass and mirror.’ At the same time it is sculptural and very different from traditional Murano mirrors, using the same techniques but in a different context. ‘I would say it’s classic but fun. It resembles the idea of the classic “shaving” mirror with a rope that connects it to the “tripod”,’ Kiki explains.

The final result is both functional and beautiful, with a unique quality that really sums up the ethos of our Handmade issue.

Yuichi Higashionna lives and works in Tokyo. He started to create works that led to his current work style around 1994.

He is an artist whose works of paintings, objects and installations are inspired by unexplainable odd and canny feelings emerged from something strikes him in his everyday life.

He creates installations of intertwining light sculptures, shadowy stencilled paintings, and striped and moiré pattering.

Inspired by interior decorating of Japanese homes in the 1970′s during a period of economic prosperity, the artist explores the aesthetic of fanshii. Reffering to that which is kitsch or odd, almost to the point of tackiness, fanshii ultimately reflected Japanese compulsive admiration for Western. He noticed the fact that the fluorescent lamp in the circular-bulb style has independently spread in its use at Japanese home in general. His works are both an homage and a satire, to the Japanese “fluorescent culture” that fascinates him and at the same time makes him uncomfortable; he wants the pieces to be familiar yet foreign, based on the Freudian concept of the “uncanny”.

The ” Untitled ” Black Chandelier is a crossing of different cultures , the most traditional barock Venetian Chandelier and the most fancy fluorescent common light …… Higashionna san last year win the Berengo Awards during 101Tokyo Art Fair , and in October 2009 he came to Venice to collaborate with the great Glassmasters in Murano in the Berengo Studio.

Around this sculpture/chandelier we present also the work of :

Tra arazzi, acquerelli e opere in vetro si snoda la narrazione del viaggio di Marco Polo, giovane mercante che scoprì l’Oriente e se stesso durante il percorso. L’artista Cibin ripercorre gli scritti del viaggiatore per dare corpo alle descrizioni e alle fantasie narrate.

Among tapestries, watercolors and glass art unfolds the narrative of the voyage of Marco Polo, a young merchant who discovered the East and himself during the journey. The artist Cibin recounts the writings of travelers to give shape to the descriptions and fantasies told.

 UN RACCONTO FANTASTICO
La mostra di Anna Paola Cibin esplora da una prospettiva ulteriore i mondi fantastici e fiabeschi, immaginari e inconsueti, narrati dal giovane esploratore Marco Polo durante il suo viaggio da Venezia alla Cina.
Il viaggio caleidoscopico, che l’artista presenta attraverso la rilettura del Milione, ripropone in chiave contemporanea e inusuale i territori della fiaba, del mito e del racconto fantastico, rivelando aspetti del tutto imprevedibili.
L’artista reinterpreta il significato delle descrizioni degli animali incontrati dal giovane Marco Polo, non tanto in chiave simbolica o religiosa, come è stato sempre fatto per gli antichi bestiari, ma dando a queste descrizioni un’interpretazione attuale.
Nelle sue opere l’umano e l’animale si fondono, per rivelare le fragilità e le debolezze dell’uomo e la forza e bellezza della natura, con una forte connotazione erotica.
L’uso del tessuto, specie del velluto, morbido e caldo, del vetro, liscio e turgido, e dell’acquerello, così delicato ed evanescente, rendono il suo lavoro sensuale e tattile.
La mostra intende quindi indagare, oltre che una diversa modalità di interpretare la dimensione del viaggio, intesa come percorso di conoscenza di un uomo, e per estensione dell’intero genere umano, in relazione a tematiche quali il rapporto con l’altro, con il diverso, l’ignoto, la sessualità e l’esotico, anche l’interessante relazione tra l’artista e la tecnica linguistica scelta per esprimersi.

 A Fantastic romance
The exhibition of Anna Paola Cibin from the perspectives of further explore the dream worlds and fabulous, imaginary and unusual, narrated by the young explorer Marco Polo on his journey from Venice to China.
The kaleidoscopic journey, which the artist presents through the rereading of the million, repeats in a contemporary and unusual territories of the fairy tale, myth and romance, revealing some very unpredictable.
The artist reinterprets the meaning of the descriptions of the animals encountered by the young Marco Polo, not so much in a symbolic or religious, as was always done for the ancient bestiaries, but giving a current interpretation of these descriptions.
In his works the human and the animal come together to reveal human frailties and weaknesses and strength and beauty of nature, with a strong erotic. The use of fabric, especially velvet, soft and warm, glass, smooth and swollen, and water-so delicate and evanescent, make his work sensual and tactile. The exhibition will then investigate, and also a different way of interpreting the size of the travel path of knowledge understood as a man, and by extension the whole human race, in relation to matters such as the relationship with the other, with the different, the unknown, sexuality el’esotico, the interesting relationship between the artist and the technique chosen language to express themselves.

Anna Paola Cibin è nata a San donà di Piave nel 1974. Dopo gli studi presso l’Istituto d’Arte, con una specializzazione in tessitura, nel 1995 ha iniziato a collaborare con la ditta rubelli, creando alcuni disegnii che sono entrati a far parte della collezione. Anche il Museo Tessile di Palazzo Mocenigo a Venezia ha riconosciuto il suo talento, inserendo le sue creazioni nell’esposizione permanente del Museo.Dopo un periodo di ricerca e studio a Londra, si stabilisce definitivamente a Venezia, dove sviluppa lo studio della stampa su velluto, nella quale trova la sua identità creativa.Anna Paola reinterpreta l’antica tecnica di stampa degli arazzi veneziani: ogni arazzo viene tinto con preziose e antiche polveri e reso ancor più unico e originale dell’innovativo uso della foglia d’oro, d’argento e di particolari in vetro di Murano.

Anna Paola Cibin was born in San Donà di Piave in 1974.After her studies at the Institute of Art with a specialization in weaving, in 1995 she began to work with the Rubelli firm, creating some designs that have become part of their collection. The Palazzo Mocenigo Textile Museum also recognized her talent, adding her creations to the museum’s permanent exhibition.  After a period of research and study in London, she moved permanently to Venice where she has opened a studio for printing on velvet – the activity that defines her creative identity. Anna Paola has reinterpreted the ancient technique of printing Venetian tapestries: each tapestry is dyed with valuable and ancient powders and are made even more unique and original by the innovative use of gold- and silver-leaf and of Murano glass for the details.
